We invite you to join us for a 60-minute webinar focused on how school-based health center providers can support students who have experienced human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Presenters from the Adolescent Health Initiative will define human trafficking and sexual exploitation and describe how adolescent-serving providers can support patients who have experienced trafficking and exploitation. Through the use of case studies, participants will have the opportunity to practice strategies shared in the webinar.

Learning objectives:

After attending this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Define human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
  2. Describe the survivor-centered model and why this is an important approach to understanding human trafficking.
  3. Describe how adolescent-serving providers can talk with their patients about human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
  4. Describe strategies adolescent-serving healthcare providers and staff can use to support adolescents who have experienced human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

Presenters:

Marlanna Landeros, MSW is the Assistant Director responsible for supporting and developing initiatives and practices designed to lead and promote diverse and inclusive resources and trainings for youth-serving professionals and health care providers on topics related to improving adolescent-centered health care through the Adolescent Health Initiative at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Among her core responsibilities, she oversees the implementation and development of the Adolescent Champion Model and Adolescent Centered-Environment Assessment Process (ACE-AP) across multiple states. Previously, over the last twenty years she has worked in various capacities in public safety. 

Emily Rowland, RN, MSc is a Registered Nurse with a Master of Science in Health Systems from the University of Ottawa, and currently a PhD candidate in Public Health at the University of Toronto. She has worked clinically in level III NICUs as well as in behavioral health settings with individuals experiencing mental health crises.  Emily’s non-clinical background includes employment in a variety of research and academic settings such as with the maternal and child health unit at World Health Organization headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland and as an evaluation expert with University Health Network in Toronto, Canada.  She brings forward an expertise in delivering trauma informed care to individuals in times of crisis and vulnerability- particularly with adolescents and new mothers. She is passionate about improving relationships between healthcare providers and their patients in an effort to achieve better physical and mental health outcomes. When she is not working, Emily finds joy in podcasts, yoga, and spending time with her family.
