School-Based Health Alliance Announces New Online Resource to Support School-Based Health Centers in Tackling Hunger

Washington, D.C. – The School-Based Health Alliance today released a new toolkit, “Emerging Models And Resources To Address Food Insecurity In School-Based Health Centers,” created in partnership with Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign. This toolkit supports school-based health centers (SBHCs) in tackling hunger in their communities by providing tools, materials, and examples from the field.

This new resource is a product of a yearlong learning network of 16 SBHCs from across the country. Through support from Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign, the SBHCs integrated food access into their services by developing programming to address food insecurity in their communities. These sites built on families’ trust in SBHCs to promote federal nutrition programs and nutritious food consumption to support favorable health outcomes and improved food security. The participating SBHCs represented diverse communities, resulting in various approaches to tackling food insecurity.

“We are thrilled to release this toolkit so that the innovations, best practices, and lessons learned from the learning network can help others in the field successfully implement their own food insecurity interventions,” said Theresa Dominguez, Senior Program Manager at School-Based Health Alliance.

“These learning network participants are innovators and champions,” said Sarah Mills, Manager, Health Systems at Share Our Strength. “We are grateful for the opportunity to share their successes and resources.”

About the School-Based Health Alliance

All children and adolescents deserve to thrive. But too many struggle because they lack access to health care services. School-based health care is the solution, bringing healthcare to where students already spend the majority of their time: in school. Since 1995, the national School-Based Health Alliance (SBHA), has supported and advocated for high-quality healthcare in schools for the nation’s most vulnerable children. Working at the intersection of healthcare and education, SBHA is recognized by philanthropic, federal, state, and local partners and policymakers as a leader in the field and a source of information about best practices.
