SBHCs Featured in The Journal of Health Care Finance

Two Alliance board members, Winston Wong and Ben Bynum, recently published an article in The Journal of Health Care Finance called “A Place for School-Based Health Centers within the New Era of Alternative Payment Models in Medicaid.” Focused on including school-based health centers (SBHCs) in alternative payment models (APM), the article highlights the benefits of SBHCs as crucial access points for health care, particularly for low-income and vulnerable children and adolescents.

The article also points to Medicaid driven APMs in places like New York. The state recently announced it would move SBHCs into its managed care program and shift toward per member per month payments. This would improve budget predictability for SBHCs and strengthen their viability. As states use Medicaid 1115 waivers, they can become more innovative in how care is paid for and delivered, creating lessons and strategies for improved SBHC sustainability nationally.
