Workshop: Flipping the Clinic: Building Patient-Centered Capacity through Expanded Health Literacy

By Parrish Ravelli

Since its inception, Salman Khan and The Khan Academy have been transforming the educational system by Flipping The Classroom. This happens through two simple concepts:

  1. lectures happen at home, work happens at school
  2. individualized educational plans for everyone

Students are learning from other students while developing deeper relationships with teachers. Classrooms are being redesigned to empower and challenge both students and teachers to have an active role in the learning process.

Now replace students with patients, teachers with providers, classrooms with doctors’ offices. What do you get? Or more importantly, how do you do it?

YES Empowerment Model Final

We’re not exactly sure ourselves, but we have some ideas! Youth Empowered Solutions (YES!) works directly with high school students to design a model of “Flipping An SBHC” through investing in youth outside of the patient-provider relationship. Come chat with us about what it looks like to engage youth in the design and delivery of their care and the opportunities there are to do some innovative work in our SBHCs.
